Tools of the trade: how we use Twist Pens at MOO HQ

Pens might be one of the oldest tools in the creative kit, but they’re still one of our faves here at MOO. From the design floor to the content corner, our MOO Twist Pens have quickly become part of the team. 

Sure, we live in a digital world. But there’s still so much value to be had in going back to basics every now and then. Whether jotting down lightbulb ideas in a brainstorm or winning a game of “Pen in a Box” (yes, that’s a thing), our pens are working hard across every corner of MOO HQ.

Bring a little play into the work day 

We can’t talk about Twist Pens without mentioning “Pen in a Box.” What began as a team-building challenge has since become the stuff of lunchtime legend.

Here’s the premise:

Two players. Two boxes. One very desirable limited-edition MOO Twist Pen. 

One player peeks inside their box and declares: “There is a pen in my box.” or “There is no pen in my box.”

The other player has to decide whether to believe them or call their bluff and swap boxes. It’s the ultimate game of poker-faced persuasion.

It’s surprisingly competitive. We’re looking at you, Bex: reigning champion and tactical mastermind. It’s also silly and really great fun. And it’s a reminder that even the most everyday objects can spark creativity, playfulness, and connection when you let them.

In gifts and welcome kits 

When we launched the MOO Twist Pen, we gifted one to every team member. Nowadays, they’re also included in our new starter welcome kits. It’s a small gesture that sets the tone for new MOOsters. To jot, sketch, scribble, and spark ideas

Outside of games and gifting, MOO Twist Pens are regularly spotted in the wild—on desks, in meetings, at sketching stations, and scrawled across Notebooks during our team workshops. For many of us, pens are still the quickest route from idea to reality.

They’re the tools we reach for when we’re thinking aloud, planning something big, or just letting the mind wander mid-coffee break. (Some of our best ideas have started as doodles, after all.)

To build habits that last 

They’re also a small way to support our employees’ wellness without another app or login. Building a handwriting habit has been shown to boost memory, spark creativity, and help us slow down in all the right ways. And since our Twist Pens are refillable, our teams can use (and love) them for longer. 

Solve problems we didn’t know we had…

One designer once used their Twist Pen to perfectly space vinyl lettering on a window display. Turns out the pen’s hexagonal shape makes for a surprisingly precise measuring tool. 

It’s also been used to line up product labels, test paper stock textures, and once, in a pinch, to hold up a wobbly prototype. Not quite what it was made for, but with such an iconic design, it’s no surprise.
